Parijat Desai

Dancemaker Parijat Desai creates hybrids of contemporary and Indian classical dance, martial art, and other forms. She is a 2016–18 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence. While in Los Angeles, Parijat won a Lester Horton Dance Award for Performance, Durfee Foundation Artist Fellowship, and California Arts Council funding. Now based in New York City, Parijat has received commissions from Grand Performances, Danspace Project, and Harlem Stage, and grants from NYFA, LMCC, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. She has guest choreographed at Stanford University, Columbia College/Chicago, and Colorado College. Her company has performed at La Mama, Dixon Place, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Asia Society, Queens Museum; Skirball Cultural Center/LA, California Plaza, the Getty Museum, Denver Art Museum, ODC Theater/SF, Dance Centre/Vancouver, National Center for the Performing Arts/Mumbai. As a Fulbright Fellow to India, Parijat created choreography with Delhi-based dancers at Islamic architectural sites for her film short The Palace Is Dreaming (2018, edited Alla Kovgan). She has collaborated with Brooklyn Raga Massive and others to create music for dance.
