Marjani Forté has taught master classes and workshops in modern contemporary dance and improvisation internationally. She is co-founder of the collective LOVE|FORTÉ and recently previewed her latest works being Here... (www.being-here.org) at Danspace Project andMemory Withholdings through LOVE|FORTÉ’s residency at Brooklyn Arts Exchange. As a former member of the company, she is also part of Urban Bush Women’s B.O.L.D Network of teachers and facilitators, having recently brought UBW’s approach to modern technique to Henan, China with the American Dance Festival. She was formerly faculty at Dance New Amsterdam, a frequent Modern Guest Artist, and pioneered a co-teaching practice at Dance New Amsterdam that connected West African traditional dances to a Modern Contemporary study with choreographer and colleague Nia Love.
In 2011 Marjani also designed The Cypher, an open level unique approach to improvisation, expanding the movers palette, through the African diasporic traditional and vernacular functioning of the circle. Her Cypher and contemporary classes were recently offered at the University of Minnesota and TU Dance Center, University of California Riverside, Pomona College, and the American Dance Festival last summer. She’s excited and honored to join Mark Morris Dance Center’s esteemed faculty and looks forward to the growth and exchange that will happen here.
