Sophia Mintz

Sophia Mintz began her dance training with Toni Carrion in Claremont, CA, studying the Royal Academy of Dance ballet syllabus. She has extensively studied various dance and movement forms including ballet, modern dance, kathak (North Indian classical dance), tango, and somatic techniques such as yoga and the Alexander Technique, as well as composition and choreography. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, with a concentration in dance and writing. Sophia began her training in flamenco and Spanish dance during a year abroad in Granada, Spain, with La Mariquilla, La Presy, and Ana Calí, and continued her studies in New York City with Andrea del Conte, Dionisia Garcia, Viola Marks-Kelly, and Jose Molina, among others. She has developed repertory and performed with Viola Marks-Kelly since 2005 at venues including restaurants, private parties, art openings, and theaters. In 2008, Sophia attended an intensive workshop on the Spanish Dance Curriculum with Dame Mavis Becker of the Spanish Dance Society and continues to study this unique syllabus. Since 2013, Sophia has taught flamenco and Spanish dance in school and community center settings, as well as privately, and has been a guest teacher at the Mark Morris Dance Center and in the Dance for PD program. Her expertise in flamenco and Spanish dance includes castanets, escuela bolera (Spanish classical dance), Spanish folk dances, staging and choreographic repertory, and working with live musicians.

The mission of the Mark Morris Dance Group is to develop, promote, and sustain dance, music, and opera productions by Mark Morris and to serve as a cultural resource to engage and enrich the community.
