Position: Budget Manager 

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

As the Dance Group approaches its 40th anniversary in 2020, key investments in operations, capital and program expansion, and legacy planning are essential. The Finance Department, currently a team of four, is expanding with the creation of a new position and is seeking a skilled systems-oriented and people-oriented person to join the team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this full-time exempt 40 hour per week position will play a vital role in supporting the organization’s financial operations. 

This position will have the primary responsibility for the planning and monitoring of all organizational, program and departmental budgets. The Budget Manager works closely with the Finance Team and collaborates regularly with the heads of all departments and program managers playing a pivotal role in effectively managing the short and long-term financial planning of the organization. The ideal candidate will have excellent analytic and interpersonal skills and be a hands-on strategic thinker who, in partnership with the Finance/HR team, is invested in contributing to the organization’s financial sustainability.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Financial planning and reporting

  • Develop, analyze and modify the annual operating budget process in collaboration with Department Heads, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director
  • Reconcile periodic activity with annual operating and capital budgets and produce accurate timely departmental and entity-wide financial reports noting trends, changes and recommendations.
  • Gather, verify, and communicate budgetary information, policies and procedures with department heads to enhance their understanding of budget to actual outcomes, their direct and indirect cost and related revenue structures
  • Analyze program profitability and make recommendations for cost control
  • Oversee allocations of overhead, occupancy and shared costs to programs
  • Prepare and monitor short and long-term cash flow projections ensuring adequate liquidity and ensuring that the Dance Group’s financial position matches expectations
  • Support CFO in reporting to the Board’s Audit, Finance and Investment committee
  • Develop, approve and submit financial reporting requirements to government, foundation, and financial institutions including but not limited to budget proposals, interim and final reports
  • Prepare ad hoc financial analysis and reports as needed to support institutional decision making
  • Compile financial data reports for outside surveys
  • Through the financial planning process build relationships with program staff and department heads and act as a liaison to the finance team to illuminate how the finance function can further support Dance Group strategic planning and operations

Tax reporting and compliance 

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Prepare and monitor short and long-term cash flow projections ensuring adequate liquidity at all times and ensuring that the Dance Group’s financial position matches expectations
  • Together with CFO, develop and track the annual operating budget and monitor financial activity throughout the year communicating and reporting to Department heads about trends, changes, and recommendations
  • Reconcile periodic activity with annual operating and capital budgets and produce accurate timely departmental and entity-wide financial reports.
  • Analyze program profitability and make recommendations for cost control
  • Oversee allocations of overhead, occupancy and shared costs to programs
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
  • Support CFO in reporting to the Board’s Audit, Finance and Investment committee.
  • Ensure timely preparation, review and submission of financial reporting requirements to government, foundation, and financial institutions

Tax reporting and compliance

  • Work with General Management to prepare and file VAT and Entertainer Tax waivers of withholding for certain domestic and international touring venues
  • Support the Finance team in preparing for the annual audit with external auditors for timely completion of the Financial Audit, Form 990 and other tax filings

QUALIFICATIONS:
You are a great candidate for this job if you:

  • Have 3-5 years of progressive non-profit accounting and budgeting experience; specifically grant budgets (developing, accounting and reporting to funders)
  • Have a strong knowledge of the operations of not-for-profit entities and best practices in financial accounting and audits
  • Have a high level of attention for detail with the ability to see the big picture and a strong affinity for financial analysis
  • Are flexible and adaptable with an ability to work effectively and accurately under pressure, meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Value integrity, sensitivity and discretion in dealing with confidential information
  • Have an interest in arts administration and are inspired by Mark Morris’ work and our programs

You will be successful in this role if you:

  • Have keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation versus only reporting
  • Have an ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Have proficiency in Blackbaud Financial Edge accounting software and interfacing budgeting software
  • Are proficient in MS Office Suite and have advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Enjoy supporting a team to reach shared departmental and organizational goals

MMDG’s Community Education Programs serve the greater New York City area working with NYC Department of Education public and charter schools and community centers that serve NYC Housing Authority, seniors, and special needs populations among others.
