Class Descriptions: Adults

Weekly and Workshop Classes

Ballet involves barre work, center exercises and movement combinations. Students will focus on technique and placement, while emphasizing musicality. Beginning classes are offered as part of our workshop series. Advanced Beginning through Advanced classes are offered on a drop-in basis.

Indian Dance (Beg) uses a contemporary approach to learning the classical Indian dance style of bharata natyam. Begins with warming and loosening the joints, followed by yoga-based stretches, basic exercises of bharata natyam and traveling steps. Classes work toward learning an original dance combination focusing on the principles of the form including its sculpturesque body lines and rhythmic footwork to an eclectic mix of Indian music.

Jazz/Hip-Hop Dance introduces students to syncopated rhythms, body isolations, and class jazz/hip-hop moves. A Beginning class is offered as part of our workshop series.

Modern Dance involves movement combinations, center exercises, elements of floor work, and combinations while emphasizing the weight of the body and its relationship to space and gravity. Students work on strength, flexibility and coordination. Beginning classes are offered as part of our workshop series. An Intermediate/Advanced class is offered on a drop-in basis.

Pilates is based on a series of core-strengthening exercises created by Joseph Pilates. These exercises use muscle control, breathing techniques, imagery and postural alignment to strengthen the entire body. The beginning Pilates Mat class is a thoughtful, non-threatening approach to these exercises and other movement. There is an emphasis on range of motion, as well as intensive work on abdominal muscles. An Open Level class is offered on a drop-in basis. Beginning classes are offered as part of our workshop series.

Salsa covers the basics of salsa dancing in the traditional New York On 2 style. Classes will include stretching, body isolations, and styling techniques. Focus will be on open shines (footwork) and basic partnerwork skills. Previous dance experience and partner not required. Note: Character shoes for women, leather sole shoes for men are recommended. Street shoes not allowed.

Tango is an introduction to the Tango vocabulary of movement where you discover how to walk in a close embrace. Learn the language of Tango and express your passion! Topics and Fundamentals: Balance (posture, tango walk), rhythms (sungle and double-time), connection (communicating with torso, tango embrace), leading and following techniques, technical control, musicality, and styles. Previous Tango experience and partner not required for beginner workshop. NOTE: Please wear shoes that allow you to pivot. Character shoes, leather sole shoes for men are recommended. Street shoes not allowed.

Tap Dance introduces students to basic tap dance technique focusing on rhythm and musicality. A Beginning/Intermediate class is offered as part of our workshop series.

West African Dance (Djembe) focuses on dances from West Africa (e.g. Senegal, Mali) that are danced to Djembe drums. An Intermediate class is offered on a drop-in basis.

Yoga (Open Level) is a system of exercises designed to promote physical and mental well-being. Students learn a series of postures and poses, while focusing on proper breathing. Two different Open Level classes are offered on a drop-in basis.

18th Century Dance Classes

Ages 13 and up are welcome to join.

Members of The New York Baroque Dance Company teach classes covering dance forms found in dance suites of the late 17th and 18th centuries. Live music accompanies every class. No previous experience required.

This class is open to professional dancers, teachers, students, musicians, singers, actors, and dance enthusiasts. Expand your circle of friends as you meet new people and learn the proper way to offer a hand during the minuet or how to cut a caper in the jig!

Please wear flexible dance shoes, no street shoes are allowed. Casual dance or exercise clothing is recommended. NEW 2009 DATES NOW POSTED.

Belly Dancing Fundamentals of Veil and Finger Cymbals

Learn the sacred art of veil technique and improvisation in belly dance. Students are encouraged to bring a lightweight fabric of at least 4 yards. Nahari Thai Silk veils in an array of exotic colors will be available for purchase from the instructor.

Sometimes referred to as “zils”, these finger instruments are the belly dancer’s main personal percussion. Learn the ancient technique of finger cymbals: rhythms, sound quality, selecting the right cymbals, tips for using cymbals. Pharonic designed, Hand-crafted, solid brass finger cymbals directly imported from Egypt will be available for purchase from the instructor.
