Workshops and Intensives

The Encounter

The Encounter is an intensive class/workshop, developed and led by Choreographer Kimberly Bartosik, which is designed to experientially introduce the participant to the process of creating her 2018 work, I hunger for you (BAM Next Wave). The 2-hour workshop involves a shared doing of physical prompts which open the body to sensory experience and the themes defining the piece: faith, violence, life force, and compassion. The practice includes physical and imagistic exercises that encourage an encounter with and connection to one’s body, history, memories, each other, the palpability of time passing, and the immediacy of being alive.

For choreographers, visual artists, composers, theater artists, and makers of all backgrounds. This class reaches across disciplines and is open to choreographers, visual artists, composers, and theater artists. No dance training necessary, but it’s helpful to have experience with rigorous physical practice and be prepared to use the body as your primary medium of connection and communication. Any race, gender, or ability can be accommodated. All ages above 16 are welcome, although the class is not appropriate for younger, pre-professional students.
