Subsidized Rental Program

Subsidized Rental Program

5:34 pm by

From the early planning stages of the Mark Morris Dance Center, MMDG has been committed to providing low cost studios to art groups in need of space.

The Mark Morris Dance Center has established a rental subsidy program in order to provide studio space to the dance community at reduced rates. The subsidized rates are available to dance groups as well as individual dancers in need of studio space for rehearsals or the creation of new work. This program is supported by a generous grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.

To qualify for MMDG’s Subsidized Studio Rental Program, each artist/company must submit an application. Approval is determined at the discretion of the Mark Morris Dance Group.

To be considered for the subsidy, the artist/company must fit and/or abide by the criteria listed below:

  • The purpose of the rehearsal must be to prepare for a New York State dance-only performance (no music, theater, opera, etc.).

    • Auditions, classes, and workshops do not qualify.
  • Applicants must submit proof of the performance (ie. a contract from a presenter, a festival commitment letter, or if self-presenting your own work, the first page of the rental contract from the venue) for the work being prepared.

    • Proof can be submitted in print or by email (preferred).
  • The Mark Morris Dance Center must be mentioned in the performance program. Please provide MMDG with a program book at the conclusion of the performance run.

MMDG's subsidized rate is either $10 or $15 per hour.

MMDG allows each artist/company 100 hours of rehearsal space at the subsidized rate per fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Once that artist/company reaches its 100 hour limit (or until all subsidized hours have been allocated), rehearsal bookings will be made at the non-profit rate.

The Subsidized Studio Rental Program is supported, in part, by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Capezio/Ballet Makers Foundation; and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Please see each studio's listings for the full listing of rental rates per space.
