Mark Morris Dance Group – Lou 100: Pacific, Numerator, Serenade, Grand Duo – New York

This week and next, MMDG is performing two programs at home. There are four works on view. One, Serenade, is a solo, premiered five years ago. Another, Pacific, was originally made for San Francisco Ballet, in 1995. Grand Duo, from 1993, is one of Morris’s most popular, and rousing pieces. The most recent work, Numerator, is from last year; this is its New York début. ★★★★✰

Mark Morris’s Legacy Plan? Posthumous Premieres

For Mark Morris, one of the most prolific, musical and vital choreographers of our time, a question has been looming: What will happen to his company and to his dances, an astounding 180 and counting, after he dies? As part of its legacy plan, the organization has created Dances for the Future, works that Mr. Morris will choreograph now but that won’t have their premieres during his lifetime.

“Layla and Majnun”: An Azerbaijani dance opera for the ages

“Layla and Majnun,” a classic Azerbaijani tale of young lovers and meddling parents, has been compared to “Romeo and Juliet.” In Mark Morris Dance Group’s production, which opened at the Kennedy Center Opera House on Thursday, the story is given lusciously sensuous form, with gentle, insistent music from the Silkroad Ensemble and two celebrated Azerbaijani singers, as well as the physical charge of Morris’s superb dancers.

On the Rise: Sarah Haarmann

Sarah Haarmann stands out without trying to. There is a precision and lack of affection ni her dancing that is very Merce Cunningham. Her movement quality is sharp and clear; her stage presence utterly focused. It's no wonder she caught Mark Morris' eye. Even though she still considers herself "very much the new girl" at Mark Morris Dance Group (she became a full-time member in August 2017), in a recenet performance of Layla and Majnun, Haarmann seemed completely in her element.
