Alexandra Berger

After studying classical ballet and jazz from an early age, Alexandra Berger finally found herself within modern dance technique. Professionally, Berger has enjoyed a predominantly freelance career and the experience of collaborating with numerous choreographers and other artists is one of her most treasured experiences as a dancer, co-creating a world to inhabit and bring to life for the audience. After she started studying Cunningham Technique® in 2006, she felt truly at home in her dancing, and had the great honor of being chosen to work with Merce as a member of the Repertory Understudy Group of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 2007. Alexandra’s experience with Cunningham Technique®, combined with her Gyrotonic® practice, provides her with the tools to bring the excitement and athleticism of dance and movement to others. Teaching a wide range of ages and skill levels, Berger approaches technique with a holistic philosophy.

Alexandra began her GYROTONIC® practice in 2001 while pursuing her degree in dance from the Joffrey Ballet School/New School University (B.F.A., 2003). She received her initial certifications in 2007 after studying with Master Trainers Juergen Bamberger and Young-Ah Kim. Berger has included in her scope of practice myriad supplemental courses, including Applications for the Fascial Body, the Pelvic and Shoulder Girdles, and the Psoas. She continues to study with Master Trainers Juergen Bamberger and Mariarosa Guglielmi, as well as with Hilary Cartwright. Berger’s teaching philosophy stems from an interest in holistic, mindful body awareness and the belief in creative curiosity through movement exploration. She continues to dance professionally with a vast range of choreographers, including Pat Catterson, Ellen Cornfield, Douglas Dunn, and Dušan Týnek. She is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work through Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service.
