BILLY SMITH is a critically-acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and educator in New York City. He has spent the past two decades performing, teaching, and creating internationally. Billy has taught and created work at numerous universities and institutions around the world, and has been featured in publications like Dance Teacher Magazine for his teaching approach and focus on musicality. Since 2024, he has served as the Mark Morris Dance Group Student Company’s rehearsal director. A native of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Billy graduated magna cum laude from George Mason University. He had the great honor of having his own work open the American College Dance Festival Gala at Ohio State University, and has been commissioned to create original choreography for the Smithsonian Institute and the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra, among others. Billy has performed the works of many renowned choreographers, including Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Lar Lubovitch, Susan Marshall, Doug Varone, Larry Keigwin, and Susan Shields. He danced with Parsons Dance from 2007-2010, and for more than 16 years has been a member of the world-renowned Mark Morris Dance Group. Billy’s work on stage has been recently celebrated in publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Broadway World. He joined MMDG as a company member in 2010.
