Ten years ago, on the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, Lincoln Center commissioned Mark Morris’s Mozart Dances to premiere at the Mostly Mozart Festival. Hailed as a masterpiece and “one of Mr. Morris’s grandest achievements” (New York Times), Mozart Dances offers a visually stimulating, elegant, and often tender display of movement and technique. In the not-to-be-missed revival of this transcendent trilogy, pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Inon Barnatan, with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, accompany the lyricism and astounding precision of the Mark Morris Dance Group.

Mozart Dances consists of three sections, each danced to a different Mozart piece.

Eleven - Piano Concerto No. 11 in F major, K. 413
Double - Sonata in D major for Two Pianos, K. 448
Twenty-Seven - Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595

It’s difficult to think of a better way to bid farewell to a New York summer than with Lincoln Center’s “Mostly Mozart” festival, and seeing Mark Morris Dance Group performing Mozart Dances was the icing on the cake. From the sound of them, you’d never know the three works Morris chose were written in the last decade of the composer’s short life. Performed by Garrick Ohlsson with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra under the baton of Louis Langrée, Mozart’s piano concertos (11 and 23) and double piano sonata (Ohlsson was joined by pianist Inon Barnatan) collectively sounded light, sprightly and enchantingly melodic on Wednesday night’s performance.
