“Eternal thanks to the marvelous Burt Bacharach, who died yesterday. Mr. Bacharach’s music has been running through the veins of American culture forever. His influence permeated popular music as much as his own music incorporated so many forms and styles. With his most notable partners, Hal David and Dionne Warwick, he gave us many of our most sophisticated songs, famously catchy and equally tricky to sing. He achieved the kind of fame that seems like it was always there…when the music becomes so widely known that it enters the folkways of a culture. My company and I had the distinct pleasure of working with a number his greatest songs over the last year for our latest show, “The Look of Love.” He generously gave us his full support and was very enthusiastic about the project in our various virtual meetings. He attended our final dress rehearsal before the premiere at BroadStage in Santa Monica and gave us some notes, some praise, and a brief pep talk. We were lucky and grateful, and we dance for him.
