Farewell Nicole Sabella
With mixed emotions, we announce the departure of company member Nicole Sabella. Nicole first performed with Mark Morris Dance Group in 2013 and became a company member in 2015. Since then, she’s danced in 13 world premieres and over 35 repertoire works globally. In Nicole’s own words: “As some of you know, life called me, in the way it does, to take care of my health last spring. I’ve been doing just that and am happy to share that I’m feeling better than I have in a long time! While I’m stepping away from dancing full time, I plan to pick up where I left off before my time with the Mark Morris Dance Group began: being a fan of the work, teaching dance, and moving my body.”
Welcome Alex Meeth
We’re excited to welcome Alex Meeth, who is joining the Mark Morris Dance Group as an apprentice this fall. Alex is not new to the company: he has performed in Pepperland, The Hard Nut, and Orfeo ed Euridice at the MET earlier this year.
Alex grew up in Dousman, WI and began his dance training at the age of 13. After graduating from the Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance, he was accepted on scholarship at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, graduating with a B.F.A. in contemporary dance performance in 2022.
Alex was a company member with Hedwig Dances, and has performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Metropolitan Opera, Boston Early Music Festival, and Dance Heginbotham
Mark Morris’ new opera collaboration:
What Belongs to You
Mark recently directed What Belongs to You, a new opera for tenor and chamber orchestra by David T. Little based on Garth Greenwell’s critically acclaimed debut novel. The opera premiered at the Modlin Center for the Arts in Richmond, VA on September 26. Read The New York Times‘ preview by clicking below:
From the Membership Dashboard: Popular Music and the Mark Morris Dance Group
While Mark Morris has a vast canon of dances choreographed to classical music, he has also created dances set to popular music since the beginning of his career. This members-only digital exhibit features pieces set to rock (Violent Femmes, Yoko Ono), country western (The Louvin Brothers, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys), and show tunes (Richard Rogers). Mark’s interest in popular music continues up to the present day in pieces like Pepperland (2017), set to music by The Beatles, and The Look of Love (2022), set to music by Burt Bacharach.
Sneak a peek at this exhibit with a clip from Resurrection set to Richard Rogers’ Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (music originally from Rodgers and Hart’s 1936 Broadway musical On Your Toes). This cinematic, multi-camera recording of Resurrection was broadcast in 2002 on PBS’ Evening at Pops, a concert television series featuring the Boston Symphony Orchestra produced by WGBH-TV.
