Sofia Engelman
Sofia Engelman is a Brooklyn-based dance artist and movement facilitator. She holds a BA with highest honors in Dance from Smith College and has studied Pilates through the Kane School, East River Pilates, Ellie Herman, The Neuro Studio, and more. Sofia is the creator of Queer Body Pilates, through which she hosts classes, continuing education workshops, and private sessions centering queer and trans folks. She is in a continual practice of finding ways to make Pilates accessible, decolonial, evidence-based, fear and harm-reducing, and consensual. She is experienced working with folks who have neuro conditions including MS, hypermobile people and those with POTS/EDS+, wheelchair users, fat-identifying individuals, and those navigating chronic pain and surgery recovery. Sofia’s facilitation is grounded in her practice as a dancer and inspired by the teachings of her dance, somatics, and anatomy/kinesiology teachers. Sofia understands the form as an adaptable practice that has the potential to play a key role in both embodied healing and somatic preparedness.
