Alexandra Cook, a member of Mark Morris Dance Group’s Education team since 2017, is the Youth and Family Programs Director and a Teaching Artist at The School at the Mark Morris Dance Center. In this role, she oversees all programming, faculty development, and classroom support for The School at the Mark Morris Dance Center and MMDG’s Community Education programs. Additionally, she is a driving force behind the Professional Development programs associated with the Education and Community Engagement Department. Alex’s experience in the field includes performance, education, dance creation, and administrative work. She trained extensively in classical ballet throughout her youth and further developed her understandings through work in a variety of modern dance techniques and West African dance while pursuing her B.A. at Denison University, where she double majored in Dance and Economics. Alex has performed as a member of Fusionworks Modern Dance Company (RI), the State Ballet of Rhode Island, with ACW Dances in Arlington, VA, and as a freelance artist. Alex completed a choreography mentorship with Doug Varone and was the Artistic Director of WorkHorse Dance Project, a project-based company working out of Brooklyn, NY. Her choreography has been presented by Gibney, the idance festival 2014 in Hong Kong, Dixon Place, SharedSpace at the Mark Morris Dance Center, Center for Performance Research NYC, Triskelion Arts, the Women’s Choreography Project (RI), with Fusionworks Modern Dance, and more. Her writing on dance education topics has been published by Dance Magazine and Dance Ed Tips. Alex has experience teaching young children through older adults, beginner dancers through advanced, and for students with a variety of learning support needs, including English Language Learners, as well as students on the spectrum and with Down syndrome. A favorite teaching credit is with Chadwick International in Incheon, South Korea, where she created, launched, and managed the dance program from 2012-2015. She is certified at the PYP and MYP levels in the International Baccalaureate curriculum framework and is a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable, and Dance/USA. Alex is in the midst of obtaining her MFA in Performing Arts Management from Brooklyn College.
