Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck
The first new Met production of Gluck's early masterpiece in over 35 years marks The Met debut of Mr. Morris, who directs and choreographs his second production on the work. This follows his 1996 version with Handel & Haydn Society. One of the world's leading counter tenors, David Daniels, takes on the role of Orfeo opposite the celebrated lyric soprano Maija Kovalevska as Euridice, who is rescued from the underworld. Heidi Grant Murphy brings her shimmering soprano to the role of Amor, the God of Love. This new production is designed by Allen Moyer (scenery), Isaac Mizrahi (costumes) and James F. Ingalls (lighting). James Levine conducts.
These performances are dedicated to the memory of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.
