Free-Spirited Innocence, With a Hint of Menace

Mark Morris began the sold-out nine-performance run of the Mark Morris Dance Group Wednesday night by accepting a WQXR American Gramophone Award (WQXR is owned by The New York Times Company), which pays tribute to individual excellence in music. "Music is a song and a dance," Mr. Morris said, quoting the late composer Lou Harrison. "Enjoy the show." Thankfully, that wasn't his only trip onstage. Performing a solo at once raw and refined in the andante section of his new dance, Italian Concerto, which is set to Bach and played by pianist Colin Fowler, Mr. Morris was also its heartbeat.
