MMDG CELEBRATES 150th PERFORMANCE at WEST COAST HOME
By: MMDG
With the West Coast Premiere of Mozart Dances at Cal Performances, Berkeley on Thursday, September 20, the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) will also celebrate its 150th performance at its West Coast home.
MMDG first performed two mixed repertory programs at Cal Performances’ Zellerbach Hall in 1987. In the last twenty years, Cal Performances has received eleven premieres and seen 52 different works by Mark Morris. Mozart Dances will be the 53rd Morris piece performed in Berkeley; that is almost half his choreographic canon.
Zellerbach Hall is the place MMDG most often performs The Hard Nut. To date, Cal Performances has hosted 65 performances of The Hard Nut. And, Cal Performances, Berkeley was pronounced MMDG’s official West Coast home in 2002.
Robert Cole, Director of Cal Performances, and Morris recently spoke in a public conversation about their successful collaborations as presenter and artist at the Western Arts Alliance conference in Los Angeles, CA, last month.
About MMDG’s relationship with Cal Performances, Morris has said, “We perform at Berkeley more than we perform anywhere on Earth because we’re valued and appreciated and attended…and that’s a really big deal.”
