Mark Morris Dance Group returns to The Joyce with Dances to American Music, a three-program repertory series presented over two weeks and highlighting Morris’s lifelong devotion to music. Spanning Jazz and 1920’s American popular song, Country-and-Western, and the pioneering voices of West Coast composers, the engagement showcases beloved repertory alongside the New York premiere of Pizzica and a world premiere.
Soul of America features live music of Jazz innovators James P. Johnson and George Gershwin, American Mavericks is set to the expansive scores of West Coast composers Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison, while American Heartbeat includes a full program of early recorded music by American Country legends Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, The Louvin Brothers, and George Jones.
