On the Membership Dashboard:
Erik Satie and the Mark Morris Dance Group

The spare, unconventional, and often witty music of French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) has inspired Mark Morris’ choreography for over forty years. Morris first set dances to Satie in the early 1980s and has since choreographed a total of eight pieces to his music, which range from miniature compositions for solo piano to longer pieces for full orchestra and vocalists. The collection of archival videos in this exhibit for members gives a sense of breadth and imagination of both Satie’s music and Morris’ choreography.

Sneak a peek at this member exhibit with a couple of select clips, including rare footage of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mark Morris, and Penny Hutchinson in Pas de Poisson:

At the Dance Center: 2 Company Classes & 2 Repertory Workshops with A.I.M

In honor of upcoming performances of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham’s Cassette Vol 1. at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, April 16-18, A.I.M is hosting two company classes and two special repertory workshops at the Mark Morris Dance Center on March 12th and 13th. Participants can take one or both workshops, and will learn an excerpt from Cassette Vol 1.

Led by A.I.M company members, the company classes take place right before the workshops and serve as a warm up for the workshops which delve into detailed phrase material from A.I.M’s repertory. Both the classes and workshops will emphasize four of the company’s core movement values: exploration, musicality, abandonment, and intuition.
