L’Allegro Project

This in-school residency deeply engages middle and high school students in the performing and visual arts using Mark Morris’ acclaimed evening length work, L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato.

An  MMDG teaching artist, working with live musicians, guides the students through the poems, music, paintings, and choreography that make up L’Allegro. The residency culminates with a visit to the Mark Morris Dance Center for a tour of the building, private performance, discussion session, and an opportunity to dance with members of the Mark Morris Dance Group.

At the end of the residency, all students will be able to: demonstrate through movement the dance material covered in the sessions; define the dance terminology covered in each lesson and use those terms in a working dance vocabulary; discuss the connection of dance with other art forms and make historical and cultural connections related to L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato; expand their perspective of dance by observing and interacting with a professional dance company; and be aware of and make use of materials and resources relating to the residency.
